I made the whole thing. All of it. (Except for the shoes and stockings, of course.) That's right, the coat, the breeches, the blouse, the corset, the hat--all made by me.

The shiny things on the coat are mainly earrings and necklaces I found at work, and a few nautical-themed charms I got at girls' camp. All the buttons are pennies. I don't even know how many pennies there are on this thing.

Speaking of thrifty, I only spent $7 on this. $6 on the fabric for the coat, which is a former set of bedsheets I got at a thrift store, and $1 on the belt, which I got at a different thrift store. (I had to made the belt buckle out of copper wire.) All the other materials for this costume I already had! It makes me feel productive to make stuff without doing a lot of shopping.

The styles are all period-accurate, as far I can tell. The materials, and the construction, not so much. I mean, I can justify using cotton because, even though cotton was illegal in most of Europe, I figure that wouldn't stop a pirate from just going down to India and getting it straight from the source. I admit that corsets weren't closed with busks in those days, but I really wasn't about to lace myself in every time. And the pennies . . . well it's hardly possible to have US pennies when the US didn't exist yet, but fortunately most of them are so scratched up and mutilated from having holes pounded into them, that it's hard to tell at a glance that they are pennies.

That's an amazing outfit! It looks posatively wonderfull. And boo to Mr. Jack Sparrow winning the contest. The only reason he won is because he's milking off of the fame of a movie. I bet his wasn't even close to as cool as yours.

No, it was worse than that. The only reason he won is because he's fortunate enough to have genes which cause him to look like Johnny Depp! Toss on a $60 Jack Sparrow costume from Taylor Maid and there he was.

Anyway, thanks. I'm glad you like it!

And talk about un-original! You did research to make sure it was accurate, designed it, and made it from scratch. Grrr, it bothers me when crap like that happens. Original work is so un-appreciated these days. *sigh*

That's really nice. The pennies are an incredibly cool choice. My only comment is that the hang of the coat looks kind of wrong to me, for some reason; I think it's because I'm used to making straight-seam shoulders rather than what appears to be a raglan-type shoulder seam.

At any rate, though, this is really well done and I'm quite impressed.

Actually the sleeves aren't raglan at all, that is simply a decorative seam. The real seam is over the shoulder towards the back a bit--I realize I probably should have had some back view photos taken. Bad me. So it is a straight-seam shoulder, but moved backwards.

The hang is probably due to the light weight of the fabric

I'm glad you liked the pennies! I think they're really cool, but I was beginning to get annoyed when everyone in my apartent complex started coming out to ask me what I was doing. ("Um, obviously I'm pounding holes into pennies, don't you have eyes?")
